Courtyard Shin-Osaka, Great Marriott Reward Perks
As tourism in Japan continues to grow at an excessive pace, Marriott has joined other international hotel brands in quickly opening new hotels. The new Courtyard Shin-Osaka is a great option for Marriott loyalists, particularly those with gold or platinum status.
Shin-Osaka station translates to New-Osaka station. The station was built to accommodate the Shinkansen (bullet train) line in the 1960s. It is not a central location, but it is very convenient if you are doing day trips on the Shinkansen.
The hotel is not connected to the station, but is only a few minutes away. A walkway from the north exit doors next to McDonalds leads you to the hotel lobby.
The hotel is new and modern.
The well appointed rooms are spacious by Japan standards.
The toiletries are standard for Japanese hotels. I am a fan of the environmentally friendly dispensers of shampoo, conditioner and body wash that are common in Japanese business hotels – can you imagine volume of waste from the usual mini bottles? Febreze-like fabric freshener is also common in Japanese hotels these days.
The hotel isn’t in the most exciting area, but the view isn’t bad. Admittedly, my status may have helped secure a better view.
In fact, the view may be an attraction for train buffs. We didn’t spend much time in the hotel, but thankfully I didn’t notice any noise from the trains.
Marriott gold and platinum status holders get free breakfast in hotel’s Lava Rock restaurant. This is a great benefit since Courtyard is the brand in the Marriott family that generally neglects to offer this perk. Lava Rock also happens to be the restaurant in the Courtyard Tokyo Station which leads me to believe that the hotels are operated by the same franchisee.
The Courtyard Shin-Osaka also has a concierge lounge, very rare for the brand.
The lounge has coffee, water, soda, and snacks during the day. A happy hour with free alcohol and appetizers is offered in the evenings.
If you are in Osaka for business, the Courtyard Shin-Osaka is a good choice. Marriott rewards members will benefit from earning points and high status holders get perks that are well above the Courtyard standard. The hotel offers spacious rooms and a convenient location for the Shinkansen. That being said, rates are generally twice as much as a comparable Japanese business hotels and the location is not very exciting. Although the lounge and breakfast are nice perks for status holders, Osaka is one of the great food cities of Japan. You’ll want to go out and experience the city.
Bottom line, I highly recommend the hotel for Marriott loyalists and business travelers who want to stay near Shin-Osaka station. It is also a good option for serious train buffs who would like a view of the tracks. I used points on my recent trip, and it was very convenient to use our rail passes from the station every day. For other travelers, I recommend staying in a more central location and exploring comparable local hotels at a much more reasonable price.
