Malta’s Three Cities, Triple the Charm
The cities of Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua, are often referred to collectively as Malta’s Three Cities. Located across the Grand Harbor from Valletta, the fortified cities were originally named, Birgu,Senglea and Cospicua. The old names are often used by locals, even though the new names have been around for generations. Signs and guidebooks seem to use the names interchangeably.
Birgu, the oldest of the cities was inhabited during Phoenician times, but the three fortified cities were established by the Order of Saint John between the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1530, the Order of Saint John moved the capital from Mdina to Birgu. It remained the capital until 1571 when Valletta was established.
Vittoriosa Harbor has a revitalized restaurant and cafe scene that is attracting attention, but the Three Cities are still generally off the radar for tourists.
